Step-by-Step:

A grade percent is the share of the points you earned. Use this grade calculator to turn a test score into a percent and letter grade, to work out what you need on your final exam to reach the grade you want, or to build a grading scale showing every possible score on a test.

Percent to Letter Grade

The most common US scale, with GPA points on a 4.0 scale. Schools vary, so your syllabus always wins.

Does 89.5 round up? Some teachers round 89.5% to 90% (an A−); others don't. The ranges above use whole numbers, so a score like 86.7% sits between rows: it's still a B, because it hasn't reached 87. To combine letter grades across classes, use the GPA Calculator.

What Do I Need on the Final?

Your course grade is a mix of everything so far and the final. Work backwards from the grade you want.

  1. Weight What You Have

    With the final worth 25%, your current 82% counts for the other 75%: 82 × 0.75 = 61.5 points.

  2. Find the Gap

For an 85% course grade you need 85 − 61.5 = 23.5 more points from the final.

  3. Scale Up the Final

The final is only 25% of the grade, so divide by 0.25: 23.5 ÷ 0.25 = 94% on the final.

When Categories Count Differently

Many classes weight homework, quizzes and tests differently. Then your grade is a weighted average, not the total points.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my grade percentage?

Divide the points you earned by the points possible, then multiply by 100. 42 out of 50 is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

What letter grade is 85%?

A B on the common US scale (83–86.99%). Without plus and minus grades, anything from 80 to 89.99% is a B. Schools set their own scales, so check your syllabus.

How do I work out what I need on my final exam?

Needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With 82% now, a final worth 25% and a target of 85%: (85 − 82 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 94%.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

Then the target can't be reached with the final alone, unless there's extra credit. The calculator shows the best grade you can still reach with a perfect final, and what you need for each lower letter grade.

How many questions can I miss and still get an A?

10% of the questions, rounded down, for an A at 90%. On a 25-question test that's 2; missing 3 gives 22 of 25 = 88%. The Grading scale mode lists every possible score for any test length.

Is 89.5% an A?

Only if your teacher rounds. Many round 89.5% up to 90% (an A−), but others use the exact percent, so 89.5% stays a B+. This calculator uses the exact percent.
