Formula: Each pays = Bill × (1 + Tip ÷ 100) ÷ People
Step-by-Step:

A tip calculator works out the tip, the total and each person’s share of a bill. Enter the bill, the tip percent and how many people are paying. It can also leave tax out of the tip, or tell you what percent you tipped from what you paid.

Tip Formulas

Every tip question comes down to multiplying by the tip percent, then dividing if you're sharing.

The Tip

"18% on a $64 bill."

Bill × Tip ÷ 100
64 × 0.18=$11.52

The Total

Bill plus tip in one step.

Bill × (1 + Tip ÷ 100)
64 × 1.18=$75.52

Each Person's Share

Split the total evenly.

Total ÷ People
75.52 ÷ 2=$37.76
When the split isn't even $100 between 3 people is $33.333… each. Round each share up to $33.34, and the group pays $100.02, 2 cents over, rather than leaving the bill 1 cent short. The calculator does this for you and shows the extra cents.

Tipping on the Pre-Tax Amount

Etiquette guides often suggest tipping on the bill before tax, since tax isn't part of the service. Many people tip on the full total for simplicity. Here's the difference on an $80 meal with $6.40 tax and a 20% tip.

Tip before tax 20% of the $80 food bill
Tip $16.00
80 × 0.2 = 16
86.40 + 16 = 102.40
$102.40
Tip after tax 20% of the $86.40 total
Tip $17.28
86.40 × 0.2 = 17.28
86.40 + 17.28 = 103.68
$103.68
The difference is the tip on the tax Here it is $1.28 (20% of $6.40). Use the Tip before tax mode above, enter the tax from your receipt, and it shows both. Need the tax itself? Try the Sales Tax Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percent as a decimal. An 18% tip on a $64 bill is 64 × 0.18 = $11.52, for a total of $75.52.

What is a 20% tip on $50?

A 20% tip on $50 is $10. Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left ($5), then double it.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides often suggest tipping on the amount before tax, since tax isn't part of the service. Many people tip on the full total for simplicity; the difference is usually small. Use the Tip before tax mode to compare.

How do I split a bill and tip between several people?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A $96 bill with a 20% tip is 96 × 1.2 = $115.20, so 4 people pay $28.80 each. If it doesn't divide evenly, round each share up to the next cent so the bill is covered.

How do I work out what percent I tipped?

Subtract the bill from what you paid, divide by the bill, and multiply by 100. Paying $70 on a $58 bill is a tip of $12, and 12 ÷ 58 × 100 ≈ 20.69%.

How much should I tip?

Customs vary by country and by type of service. In the US, 15% to 20% is common at sit-down restaurants, while in many other countries tips are smaller or service is already included in the bill. Check your bill for a service charge before adding a tip.
