Rule: a fraction bar means divide: numerator ÷ denominator.
Step-by-Step:

To turn a fraction into a decimal, divide the top number by the bottom number. This calculator does that with the long division shown, gives the percent and the simplest form, marks repeating decimals with a bar, and also works backwards, turning any decimal into a fraction.

Common Fractions as Decimals and Percents

A bar over a digit means it repeats forever: 0.3 is 0.333….

Look at the Denominator

Simplify first. If the denominator's only prime factors are 2 and 5, the decimal ends. Any other prime factor makes it repeat.

Why 2s and 5s? Our number system is base 10, and 10 = 2 × 5. A denominator made only of 2s and 5s can be scaled up to 10, 100 or 1,000 exactly: 3/8 = 375/1000. A 3 or a 7 never divides a power of 10, so those decimals can't stop.

Decimal to Fraction

Read the decimal out loud: 0.375 is "375 thousandths", which is already a fraction.

  1. Write It Over a Power of 10

One zero for each decimal place: 0.375 has 3 places, so it's 375/1000.

  2. Find the GCF

The greatest common factor of 375 and 1000 is 125. The GCF calculator shows how.

  3. Divide Top and Bottom

    375 ÷ 125 = 3 and 1000 ÷ 125 = 8, so 0.375 = 3/8.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. 3/8 means 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. By hand, use long division: add a decimal point and zeros after the 3 and keep dividing.

How do you convert a decimal to a fraction?

Write the digits after the point over 10, 100 or 1000 (one zero per decimal place), then simplify. 0.375 = 375/1000, and dividing both by their GCF of 125 gives 3/8.

Why do some fractions give repeating decimals?

A simplified fraction ends only if its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. 3/8 ends because 8 = 2 × 2 × 2. 5/6 repeats (0.8333…) because 6 = 2 × 3: the division keeps landing on the same remainder.

How do you turn a repeating decimal into a fraction?

Use algebra to cancel the repeating part. For x = 0.1666…, 100x = 16.666… and 10x = 1.666…. Subtracting gives 90x = 15, so x = 15/90 = 1/6. For one repeating digit, put it over 9: 0.333… = 3/9 = 1/3.

How do you simplify a fraction?

Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor. For 18/24 the GCF is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4. It's in simplest form when only 1 divides both parts.

How do you convert a fraction to a percent?

Convert it to a decimal and multiply by 100. 3/8 = 0.375, and 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%. On a calculator, press 3 ÷ 8 × 100 =.
